Whether you\u2019re pursuing your pilot\u2019s license or have logged thousands of hours in the air, it always a good idea to study up on your aviation terms. How many of these 15 terms do you<\/em> know?<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Bleed air:<\/strong>Hot, compressed\u00a0air from gas turbine engines, often used to provide pressure for the aircraft\u00a0cabin<\/a>\u00a0and to keep vital parts of the aircraft free of ice.<\/li>\n
  2. DH:<\/strong>Decision Height. The height at which the pilot must have the runway in sight to continue descent, or initiate a go-around. Below this height, a pilot must land the plane.<\/li>\n
  3. Go-Around:<\/strong>When the pilot determines prior to or at the decision height to climb away from the runway on approach and start the approach again.<\/li>\n
  4. Magnetic course:<\/strong>An aircraft\u2019s intended horizontal direction. This is measured in degrees clockwise from magnetic north.<\/li>\n
  5. OAT:<\/strong>Outside Air Temperature.<\/li>\n
  6. PIREP:<\/strong>Observations on the weather reported by a pilot in flight. Short for \u201cpilot report.\u201d<\/li>\n
  7. POH:<\/strong> Pilot\u2019s Operating Handbook. This most often refers to the aircraft owner\u2019s manual.<\/li>\n
  8. STOL:<\/strong>Short Take-Off and Landing.<\/li>\n
  9. STOVL:<\/strong>Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing.<\/li>\n
  10. UTC:<\/strong>Refers to Coordinated Universal Time, which was formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time.<\/li>\n
  11. VFR:<\/strong>Visual Flight Rules. Rules for the safe operation of an aircraft in specific meteorological conditions. Generally defined as five or more miles of visibility and 1,000 feet vertical and one nautical mile horizontal clearance from clouds.<\/li>\n
  12. Wake turbulence:<\/strong>Large, heavy aircraft generate wingtip vortices to produce lift. However, such forces are so great that they can provide a danger to smaller aircraft behind them.<\/li>\n
  13. Willco:<\/strong> short for \u201cWill comply.\u201d May be used in place of \u201cRoger\u201d to indicate that an instruction has been received and understood. Fun fact: the term \u201cRoger\u201d originates from one of the early versions of the Western Union telephonic alphabet<\/a>,in which \u201cRoger\u201d was used for the letter R.<\/li>\n
  14. XMSN:<\/strong>Transmission<\/li>\n
  15. XPDR:<\/strong>Transponder<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
