In the 1920\u2019s, stunt pilots began a wildly popular form of entertainment, called barnstorming. These exhibitions grew out of the early flight demonstrations staged by the Wright Brothers and other pilots, and became the foundation for modern airshows. World War one pilots \u2013 eager to stay in the skies but with nowhere to go \u2013 traveled the country, from hayfield to hayfield, staging flying shows.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the wild barnstorming tradition has largely fallen by the wayside as aviation has become more regulated.\u00a0 But <a href=\"http:\/\/wyso.org\/post\/local-pilot-keeping-barnstorming-tradition-alive#stream\/0\">Wyso recently interviewed Dayton, Ohio resident Dewey Davenport<\/a>, who is keeping the barnstorming tradition alive.<\/p>\n<p>Davenport keeps a private airstrip near an old pole barn which he uses as his hangar. According to Davenport, he started out flying a 1929 Travel Air 4000, which he still operates. He gives rides in historic aircraft from the barnstorming era to both keep the history fresh and to give people an experience of open-air flying that most don\u2019t experience today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s a passion,\u201d Davenport said. \u201cIt\u2019s something that I\u2019ve really wanted to do since I was a child.
