Last\nweek, we shared five reasons why now is\na great time to become a pilot<\/a>. If you\u2019re still on the fence about learning to fly,\nconsider taking a discovery flight! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\ndiscovery flight is an opportunity to taste the freedom and fun of flying\nwithout any commitment to continue training. The goal is to give you an idea of\nwhat\u2019s to come if you decide to pursue flight lessons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s\nan overview of what to expect and how to make the most of your discovery\nflight:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part 1: Pre-flight briefing<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Your\ndiscovery flight will typically begin with a pre-flight briefing. The\ninstructor will explain the plan for the flight, review the weather, and tell\nyou about the aircraft. Then, you and your instructor will complete a safety\nwalk around the airplane, giving you a chance to get a closer look at the\naircraft and ask any questions you may have. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part 2: Time to fly! <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Now\nit\u2019s time for the best part: flying! Before takeoff, the instructor will run\nthrough the checklist and startup procedures. You\u2019ll notice that the airplane\nhas two sets of controls. Once you\u2019re at a safe altitude, the instructor will\nlet you take the controls and guide you through most of the flying! You\u2019ll get\na sense for controlling the airplane at straight and level flight and learn how\nto turn, climb, and descend. If you\u2019re comfortable with it, the instructor may\neven demonstrate more advanced maneuvers like a steep turn or stall during the\nlesson. Have fun! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part 3: Post-flight briefing<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

After\nlanding, taxiing, and shutting down the airplane, the instructor will talk to\nyou about the experience and how you did. Now\u2019s your chance to ask plenty of\nquestions about flying and get a feel for the instructor\u2019s teaching style and\npersonality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations, you just completed your first flight lesson! What\u2019s next? If you\u2019re interested in continuing your lessons, contact the flight school to review costs and understand the training timeline. You\u2019re on your way to becoming a pilot! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If\nyou\u2019re not ready to commit yet, consider taking a second or third discovery\nflight with another instructor or airplane. Even if you decide that flying is\nnot for you, a discovery flight will likely be a fun, memorable experience.\nGive it a try! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
