However beautiful it may be, the transition to autumn also brings a unique set of challenges and safety concerns for pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help you prepare for a safe fall season, keep these tips in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#1: Don\u2019t Skimp on the Preflight<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve probably heard the saying: <em>Preflight like your life depends on it, because it does!<\/em> Even on those perfect fall flying days when you can\u2019t wait to get in the air, it\u2019s important to take the time to complete a thorough preflight inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preflighting your aircraft includes inspecting your aircraft propeller. Here are a few pointers to keep in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visually inspect your propeller blades, spinner, and hub assembly. Look for any dents, nicks, gouges, cracks, missing hardware, and signs of corrosion, erosion, or oil leakage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next, carefully run your fingers over the blades, especially along the leading edge, to check for imperfections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While preflighting, check the ground around your aircraft for FOD (foreign object debris), which can be thrown into the air by your prop during engine startup, taxi, or takeoff.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have any questions or concerns about your propeller, don\u2019t wait to consult a <a href=\"https:\/\/hartzellprop.com\/services\/overhaul-and-repair-services\/recommended-service-facilities\/\">qualified prop shop<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also check out Hartzell\u2019s helpful <a href=\"https:\/\/hartzellprop.com\/news-events\/videos\/repair-and-maintenance\/\">maintenance videos<\/a> with preflighting tips for both aluminum and composite airplane propeller blades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#2: Know When to Preheat Your Aircraft Engine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>That chill in the air means it\u2019s time to start thinking about preheating your aircraft engine \u2014&nbsp;not only to ensure smoother, safer takeoffs but also to protect the life of your engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to uniformly heat-soak your entire aircraft engine is by using a multi-point aircraft preheating system, which is standard on all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tanisaircraft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tanis preheat systems.<\/a> Other preheating systems simply warm the aircraft\u2019s oil pan, which may not provide enough clearance between critical metal parts to provide adequate lubrication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When is it cold enough to begin preheating your aircraft engine? Generally speaking, preheating is recommended for aircraft engines that have been cold-soaked to a temperature at freezing or below, but you should always check your engine manufacturer\u2019s recommendations. According to Tanis, many customers choose to preheat when the outside temperature drops below 50\u00b0F\/10\u00b0C to ease startup, prevent wear and tear on their engine, and reduce run-up times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>#3: Plan for Reduced Daylight Hours<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Last but not least, the changing seasons mean pilots need to be aware of reduced daylight hours and plan accordingly. As a reminder, the clocks will fall back on November 5, 2023, and the sun will set earlier in the evening.
